Institut Du Monde Arabe | Curator Tour of Vive la mariée Exhibition

About the Experience

Vive la mariée Exhibition Poster

Join us at the Institut du Monde Arabe for a curator-led tour of Vive la mariée (Long Live the Bride!), an exhibition exploring marriage in the Maghreb as a pivotal moment in personal and social life.

Celebrated with great ceremony, it is a time of coming together in shared joy, so much so that one of the words for marriage is farah, meaning “joy” in Arabic. The exhibition presents some forty costumes and adornments from Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian collections, dating from the 19th to the 20th century and never before shown in France, highlighting regional specificities and shared practices, particularly between Muslim and Jewish communities. These heritage works are mirrored by 27 contemporary artists, primarily women, from the Maghreb and its diasporas, who offer their own perspectives on the stages of marriage and what these rituals reveal about the societies that practice them today.

Blending archives, artistic creations and an immersive scenography, this is a chance for members to experience a celebration of tradition, memory and the women who carry them forward.
