Letter from our member Camilla Singh

For those returning from a summer of travel, welcome back. For those who stayed home, I’m looking forward to reconnecting. And for all of us I share with you what is on my mind now and pretty much every September. Discomfort, often misunderstood, as a catalyst for profound healing and growth.

I’ve just returned from 2 months away, visiting the countries I call home, the people who make them home, and the landscapes, flora, fauna and foods I instantly commune with. Beyond the physical journey, travel is a mental odyssey that alters my perception. The take off and landing alone tweak my paradigms.

This year I was attuned to family and friends’ critical underpinnings about living where they live. I noticed the limitless ways a cultural sense of right and wrong can alienate people from the happiness and wellbeing they seek.

On some level I’m evaluating whether I am living in the right place.  I’ve concluded that I may not see the likes of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard here or The Smile, but I do have the privilege of participating in constructing alternatives alongside the many energetic doers and makers who populate the UAE, coaxing each other to keep seeing beyond the surface.

As the new art season unfurls its vibrance may we embrace discomfort, seek healing and learn from the harmony and dischord of diverse cultures. Let art be our guide inviting us to see the world through lenses that transcend time and place.

Wishing you a season of inspired and transformative revelations.
