About the Artist

Hani Zurob Portrait

Zurob's work addresses identity, place and memory, and the states that accompany them: suspension, delay, waiting, exile, movement, displacement, absence and resistance.

His oeuvre draws on the personal memories and stories that shaped his life, which connect to events in Palestine and the region and their complex political and cultural dimensions. Through them, he researches how deconstructing the relationship between past and present affects himself and others, so that his art transcends borders and geography. He works across media, allowing the concept behind each work to determine his choice of material, sometimes literally and sometimes metaphorically.

His practice is regarded as an important voice in contemporary Palestinian culture and a significant contribution to the creation of an Arab aesthetic. While it gives powerful expression to the Palestinian collective experience, it also speaks to universal themes of personal identity.
His work is held in collections internationally, including the British Museum, London; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; Mairie de Paris; Arab American National Museum, Michigan; Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah; and Dalloul Art Foundation, Beirut. A monograph, Between Exits: Paintings by Hani Zurob, written by Kamal Boullata, was published by Black Dog Publishing, London, in 2012. Zurob received the Bourse et Prix Renoir in 2009 and was named one of ten "international artists to watch" by The Huffington Post in 2013.
