ABOUT THE EVENT

Dear Member,

We are delighted to invite you to a virtual tour of Tammam Azzam current solo exhibition in Berlin, led by the artist himself, followed by a conversation with Shahane Hakobyan, the director and programs curator of the gallery and its project space 68 projects.

As a member please feel free to invite one or two friends.

Tammam Azzam (born in Damascus in 1980) received his artistic training from the Faculty of Fine Arts, at Damascus University, specialising in oil painting and was a fellow at Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, Institute for Advanced Study, in Delmenhorst in 2016. He has been living in Berlin since 2018. His works are included in collections in Europe, the Middle East, and the U.S. They have been exhibited throughout the world in prestigious institutions ( Washington, D.C ,Toronto, Italy, Dubai, San Francisco). In 2021, together with artists like Monica Bonvicini, Rebecca Horn, and Lawrence Weiner, he will contribute a column to Stoa 169, the “Artist Colummned Hall” in Polling, initiated by Bernd Zimmer. Tammam Azzam has received numerous awards and prizes, most recently the Creative Activism Award of the Cultures of Resistance Network.

His fragmented compositions highlight the physical remnants of conflict and showcase the importance to rebuild and create from destruction. Though he captures a kind of chaos in these works he also focuses upon the constructive nature of the synthesis. The fractured elements come together to create a new reality, one which concentrates on the use of broken elements to create a new whole. Within his paper collages the artist works with up to 50.000 shreds of hand-painted paper, arranged in several layers, coming together like mosaics which unfold into powerful abstractions resembling people, buildings, structures and disasters.

Azzam’s solo exhibition “Bilder ohne Namen” | “Untitled Pictures” from Aril 29 - June 19 brings together for the first time the artists paper collage works along side his paintings. Tammam Azzam’s paper collages and acrylic paintings have been “pictures without names” for twenty years. He leaves it to the beholder to interpret them. Instead he uses art to address the urgent questions of our times and creates images which aim directly at our emotions and stay in our memory.
